Everyone has different style rules they adhere to.
Some people say to invest in accessories and save on everyone else. Other people say to invest in the classics that never go out of style. And while I tend to lean towards the last rule, my rule is much simpler:
Invest in your individual lifestyle and focus on versatile pieces that bring you joy and make you FEEL great.
Growing up, stylish people always told me to save up for a classic, white silk blouse. So I did that, three years ago, but the truth of the matter is, I’ve worn this tee-shirt more times in the last MONTH than I wore my silk blouse. While I LOVE my silk blouse, the high-maintenance requirements to keep it clean and beautiful don’t mesh very well with my inability to remember to take things to the dry-cleaners on a regular basis.
So after reading The Life Changing Magic of Tiding Up (an excellent book for those who feel the weight of having too many belongings and aren’t sure where to begin the purge), I started to REALLY evaluate my lifestyle and discovered that stuffy pieces don’t mesh well with my easy breezy personality.
So what does that mean for my closet - and yours?
I got rid of the button-up blouses that were too tight, and opted for softer fabrics that were easy to maintain. It meant ridding my closet of those fast-fashion tees I wore a few times but had already deteriorated. But what it left me with was a closet full of pieces I really LOVED…even if there were still a few holes that needed to be filled.
One of which was finding the perfect white tee. YOU GUYS - there are a lot of companies out there with the promise of the perfect white tee, and it took me years - LITERALLY YEARS - to find the perfectly worn-in everyday tee. And I’m wearing it in this post.
It’s from Re/Done, an eco-friendly brand who consciously makes clothing or remakes vintage denim to fit the modern woman. It’s worn by just about every It-Girl out there, and if you’re wondering if the quality matches the price tag, my answer is: A THOUSAND TIMES YES.
Every since purchasing a pair of Re/Done jeans, I’ve worn them almost every weekend and most evenings after work. They have the classic ‘blue jean’ feel, and while I was nervous about the no-stretch fabric, it makes them comfortable for all seasons. I love the cool, laid back vibes of these distressed pair, and I’m feeling like I need to invest in a second pair without the rips so I can wear them to family functions without the, “do you need money to buy a pair of jeans without all the holes,” comments. Looking at you, Gramps.
And because I’ve found the perfect tee/denim combo, it makes getting dressed SO EASY. My entire life up until the last few years frequently involved morning meltdowns in my closet because I had "nothing to wear.” Now that I have a few high-quality basics, deciding on an outfit is 1000x less stressful.
