Unless you live in LA, Florida or anywhere near the equator, winters can be brutal. And taking outfit photos when the weather is crummy? The literal worst. The biting cold, the limited options (unless you have an unlimited cute coat supply), all of it can really put a damper on blogging. That's why I've put together a few tips on how I get through the bitter cold while taking outfit photos!
1. Two words: hand warmers.
These can make a shoot go from brutal to bearable. It’s much easier to give a real smile when you aren’t shivering.
2. Bribe your photographer with brunch (or coffee at the very least.)
Even when my husband shoots, I’ll try to even think of something nice to do for him, like bake his favorite treat. No one wants to feel like they're being used, especially when it's under 40 degrees.
3. Fingerless gloves are your friend.
If you’re shooting with another blogger (like I typically do), it’s a great idea that whomever is shooting keeps their hands warm. The fingerless gloves really make a difference.
4. Scout a location beforehand.
Nothing is worse than wondering around looking for a great spot in the cold. NOTHING. Sometimes I’ll drive around and look for a great spot so I’m not searching in the cold.
5. Have a shot list in mind beforehand.
When it’s cold, I can easily forget things. That cute necklace you’re being paid to promote? The whole reason you’re shooting in the first place? It may be forgotten if it isn’t written down.
6. Take an extra moment to notice the little things.
It’s so easy to want to get through a shoot quickly that it’s not until you get home until you realize one of your blazer sleeves was rolled while the other wasn’t. This has happened twice to me and BOTH were done when the weather was cold. Make a mental (or physical) checklist to ensure the styled shoots are styled the way you want.
7. Smart layering.
Fleece lined tights, tights under leggings, thermals under sweaters…be smart about the way you’re layering. Don’t layer so much that you look like a grizzly bear (unless you’re going for that furry monster look, those jackets are the coolest though.) Just like when you’re teacher told you not to study more, but smarter? Same with layering.
