Friend Date

July 7, 2015 Julien Garman

I’ve been on a big friends kick lately. No, not my all-time favorite show that caused me to evaluate all my relationships in FRIENDS characters (“he thinks we’re Rachel and Ross, but we’re really more Rachel and Joey…) - but developing friendships. It’s something I’ve mentioned here before, and something I’ll probably continue to mention because I think it’s one of the most important things we can do for ourselves. And maybe because I missed out on really making friends in college.

High school? That was a breeze. I attended boarding school, where I led my basketball team as captain and championed change as class Vice President. I was at no loss for friends. But when college rolled around, it was a different story. My first two years were spent at a small, private school in Tennessee where I struggled finding the right group of friends…but when I finally did, I had already decided to transfer into a state school to save on tuition. Thus started my journey again at JMU, where I made a grand total of three friends. And when I moved back home after graduation, I knew no one.

So I put myself out there. I attended a ton of networking events, started my blog, took time to really get to know the people I’d met, and invested in those friendships. Not many people start a blog to make friends and develop relationships, but I did. And now, my heart is so full with gratitude for the incredible women I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and call my friends.

I met up with one of these newfound friends last week at WK Hearth, a cute farm-to-table style restaurant in Purcellville. We both arrived in similar casual outfits (obsessed with Lauren’s blog!), gabbed about our foray into blogging and accidentally closed down the restaurant after we lost track of time. That’s how you know you’ve found a true friend.

If you’re in a place where you’re feeling lonely or friendless, get up and get out there! If you’re a blogger, head to a Blogger Scene event (where I met all my favorite people, including Lauren!) If you’re a working girl (or gal) in the city, hit up happy hour with a few coworkers! Yes, spending an evening in with Netflix and take out is super alluring, but trust me on this one. Friendships bring the best kind of joy that OITNB could never fill.

Ice Cream Date

June 18, 2015 Julien Garman

You guys, it’s hot tamales out here. Although it doesn’t officially start for a few days, summer is already full steam ahead. And while I am totally digging this weather over the rough winter we had, there’s just one small problem. Fashion.

When the weather is hot and muggy, the last thing I want to do is throw on an interesting outfit with layers, gobs of jewelry and heavy makeup, AMIRIGHT?! I like to keep things simpler in the heat, but add just enough interest to keep the outfit fun.

I wore this for a date to our local ice cream shop. Luckily, we’re not far from our town, so we walked there one nice evening. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, it was almost closed and they only took cash. WHO CARRIES CASH?! We certainly don’t. I’ve never walked so sad in my entire life.

Until we got back home and the hubs announced he was going to the grocery store - and came back with rooter and ice cream for my favorite treat ever - rootbeer floats! We camped out on our back porch in our torn-up wicker love seat and watched Dallas chase squirrels around the yard. If only every evening could end like this…

Paradise

March 13, 2015 Julien Garman

The beach is my happy place. Always has been, always will be. There’s something about the beach that makes tasting the salt in the air, jumping into the freezing water and sipping something yummy in the warm ocean breeze heal your soul.

It’s sort of a tradition for us to hit up the Marriott at least once on our trip for drinks after a hot day in the sun. I wanted to wear something that could be appropriate for walking around the resort but also super comfortable and lightweight. I picked up this dress from Anthom around Christmas and have been dying to wear it ever since. I also snagged this Lack of Colour hat on sale at Free People a few weeks ago and I wore it to the beach every single day.

I had such a great time in Florida that we’re already planning our next trip! We’re sort of between cruising the southern carribean, heading to Cabo, or maybe an all-inclusive in Bermuda. Have you been to any of those places? If so, what do you recommend?!

Update on Winter and Such

February 25, 2015 Julien Garman
blue sweater

A few months back, right before the weather got unbearable, I posted 10 ways to beat the winter blues. Some of the things I’d tried and some I wanted to check out. Here’s an update:

Working out: The whole waking up early or working out when I got home thing just wasn’t working. So I decided to utilize my lunch hour three times a week at my work gym. Oh I struggled with making this decision. What if people I know see me working out? What if people I work with see me sweat? Like it was a big thing. Then I decided - I’d rather be embarrassed then gain anymore weight. I can’t begin to tell you how much this has helped me. I have so much more energy and I find that my general happiness scale is much higher on days I work out.

Clean eating: Ehh, this one hasn’t really gone according to plan…the carbs keep coming back to haunt me. However, on days when I drink a green smoothie or have a salad for dinner, I feel much better.

Not hibernating: FAIL on almost all fronts. I also blame The Blacklist.

Not going to bed early: Also a fail. Life is hard.

Buying cute coats: I should have mentioned this more the last time, but I’m realizing that it’s not always the cute coat I grab before I head out the door…it’s whichever coat is the warmest. Thus, need to find a super cute, down jacket with furry hood asap.

Take vitamins regularly: This is probably the second best thing I’ve done for myself…when I don’t forget. I really need to get myself one of those weekly pill contraptions but I’ve resisted considering how old I feel when I see one.

Get some sun: Umm sike. This weather has not been conductive to enjoying any amount of sunlight. When the weather is above 45, I may be seen outside taking outfit photos.

Take a vacation: This is coming a little later this year for me…but thankfully I am headed to sunny Florida on FRIDAY. Yes, that is t-minus two days and counting. GUYS just having this on my calendar gives me joy. And hope. Please take advantage of a long weekend and JUST GO.

Limit caffeine intake: This has gone really well, surprisingly. I’ve switched out my evening hot chocolate/latte for decaffeinated tea and it works wonders for my mood.

Focusing on a passion or learn something new: I sort of anticipated that I would get more involved in artsy things, I’ve developed an even deeper love for cooking…and tried a ton of new recipes. Like I want to be one of those moms where their kids are like, ‘oh ya my mom is literally the best cook ever.” #lifegoals The latest in my homemade cooking adventures has been homade granola. SO GOOD YOU GUYS. I basically went off of Barefoot Blonde’s recipe and added a cup or two of coconut shreds. Mmmm mmmm good.

So that's where I am...how have you been surviving this treacherous winter? Share with me in the comments below!

Green Tartan Coat

One of my goals for this winter has been to not let myself be overtaken by the cold. That means no making excuses when friends invite me out for dinner when I'm already home in my sweatpants. That means not wearing aforementioned sweatpants out in public (unless dressed up like Natalie did here.) That means not getting into a style rut that involves this black coat, while classic, can be a bit boring when worn on repeat.

Next week I'll be sharing 10 tips on surviving winter, mentally, physically and stylishly. In the meantime, I'll share one of the tips: Buy a few cute coats.

I'm not saying spend a ton. The one I'm wearing from Lookbook Store is under $80. The one I wore in yesterday's post? Under $70. If you're looking for a more classic style, my mom bought me this gorgeous grey one for Christmas for under $200. This might sound totally weird, but having a fun selection of winter coats has really helped keep away the winter blues.

How do you stay upbeat in winter? I would love to hear your tips below!
