Rain for Days

May 22, 2017 Julien Garman

A few weeks ago, I visited NYC for 36 hours for a social media conferences with Fohr Card. It was sort of a whirlwind experience, hopping between brand meetings, hitting up our favorite spots in the city for photo opps, and catching up with old friends over long, candlelit dinners in Soho.

If you read this post, you’ll know our trip was marked by LOTS of rain. I mean - it rained the ENTIRE time we were there. Not that I’m complaining. New York is dreamy no matter what the weather is!

I brought along my favorite trench coat from Burberry that I’ve been living in this Spring…it’s one of those pieces that has become such an iconic staple in my closet - and always keeps me dry. (My only regret is I wish it had a hood!)

The reason I bring this up is because there was this moment during the trip that really stood out to me as feeling like, well, a right of passage, if you will.

I was getting ready to leave the city, I had all my bags packed and ready to go. I stood outside of Archer Hotel, in the rain, in this jacket, and looked down the street for a cab. Nothing. A few passed by with their lights off (meaning that they weren’t available - for anyone who hasn’t traveled to NYC yet!) but it was a couple minutes before I spotted it.

A bright yellow taxi started turning around the corner and I knew it had to be mine. Rush hour was just beginning and I had T-minus 30 minutes to get to my bus downtown. The sidewalks were a sea of faces, and I hated to see them as obstacles, as competition, but they were.

Now, I’m not usually great with timing, but when I saw that taxi, and I saw a small open spot to wave it down about 100 feet away, I knew what I had to do. I started to run, ducking and dodging people in my path, until I came to that opening - just in time to pop out into the street and stretch out my arm at the perfect moment for that cabbie to spot me.

Then it happened - he stopped! Just with the wave of my arm - it’s like time stopped with it. I…WAS…SO PROUD!

I know - I know - it’s NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. But to me it was. It felt so natural. It felt so RIGHT. It felt like New York was giving me a wink goodbye.
